O’Fallon Pumpkin Beer – O’Fallon Brewery


We had a brief lull in events there for a moment, but now that it’s a stones throw to October, we are back and kicking into full steam. Today’s competitor is a cult classic in some parts, and a major competitor for pumpkin party beer across the country. So with out further ado, lets dig into it!


Name: O’Fallon Pumpkin Beer

Place of Origin / Brewer: O’Fallon, MO / O’Fallon Brewery

Beer style / ABV%: Pumpkin Ale / 5.60%

Specialty Prep / Individuality: O’Fallon Pumpkin Beer is brewed by adding 136 pounds of real pumpkin to a mash of pale malt, caramel 90, and white wheat, which is lightly hopped with Cluster hops. Once finished it is spiced with cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg.



There’s a lot to be said for simplicity and O’Fallon, with its Baseball Team-styled brewery logo, delivers. Featuring a skewed Jack O’Lantern and a few fall leaves floating against a black backdrop, the label is clear and concise but sadly lacking any expansion on the style, spice content, or even the ABV. – Tim

I’m gonna be honest here, this label -while unfailingly communicating it’s contents- ain’t sexy. I’m sure it’s tradition, but it might be time for an update. – Mike


Color: 5.5

Lots of action right away from the carbonation, leaving a nice billowing head. It’s a super clean transparent ale that gives light to a reddish pale and golden malt glow. – Rick

This looks quite a bit more appealing than the label. Gorgeous clarity, nice carbonation levels, and a pillow top ivory head that sticks around for a good bit. An autumn amber the color of turning leaves. Now if only it wasn’t 97 degrees outside… – Mike

Aroma: 6.5

Musty, earthy pumpkin at first whiff, followed by the sweetness of sugar and touch of cinnamon spice. There’s a slight roasted caramel malt quality as well. – Brittney

A bit of brown sugar and some cinnamon really blend well to concoct a nice sense of homemade apple pie crust. A touch of raisin is fairly detectable as well as some toffee. – Rick

Mouth feel: 5

Light and slightly slick but not as snappy as I would have guessed from the amount of carbonation when poured. Definitely settles into almost a flatness. – Brittney

Tongue burn from the high carbonation gives way to crisp ale with a bright but slightly thin body. – Tim

Tasting notes: 6

Cinnamon and Nutmeg soar to the forefront with sweet cream and pumpkin following shortly behind. It’s a pretty spot on semblance of canned pumpkin pie that’s been topped with a dollop of whipped creams, and has a biscuity – graham cracker crusty back. – Mike

With an overall pumpkin pie profile of nutmeg, cinnamon and clove the mixture lacks any real substance which unfortunately matches up with the body. Toasted malt and some hop bitters try to work their complex magic but the lack of any real presence gives the ale more of a late-summer lager profile and not enough fall goodness. – Tim

This one is not overwhelming in any category. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove are all there but only the cinnamon really lingers making it fairly dominating. There is a bit of pumpkin serving as a solid foundation for the spices, but it’s a bit sweet for my tastes. – Brittney

I enjoy the subdued mix of flavors here. This beer has some nice qualities but it seems closer to a fruit beer or a cider than a pumpkin ale. The minimal pumpkin allows for some cinnamon, apple, and raisin flavors to take front row. It isn’t too exciting, but I find this beer could make a nice introduction to the style and broaden ones appreciation for pumpkin ales. – Rick

Finish: 6

Lingering pumpkin sweetness as the spice fades and a touch of the more bitter side of molasses roast and clove give it a drying quality. Fairly lengthy, but pleasing enough. – Mike

This is a very smooth and watery beer with a slightly bitter finish that caps each sip well. It’s easy to drink and light on the palate making it very session-able. – Rick

The pumpkin is MIA but for the illusion presented in the spice profile. Which, while on paper seems like a fine balance of pie spices, sadly it just doesn’t amount to enough overall bang for your buck. – Tim

There is a solid presence of malt, which lends some presence to the pumpkin, but the spice is very prominent here, making it feel a bit out of check. – Brittney

It seems to start with unced sweetnesss, but as the glass warms a pleasant, subtle complexity begins to emerge along with breadier malts and a spicy bite. – Mike

Well done. This beer seems like it could lean towards cloying at any moment and completely ruin it for me, but there’s a nice balance here akin to dry apple juice. The watery body and mouthfeel play a big part in keeping the sweetness at bay. – Rick

While you’re still waiting for the mercury to drop below the boiling point, you could easily put away a few of these ales. The inoffensive 5.5% ABV won’t wreck your afternoon, but with so many other great pumpkin beers on the market, this one is hardly worth running out and stockpiling. – Tim

In a world of gigantic cloying imperial pumpkins, this is a pretty respectable session brew. Not too heavy for milder autumns and enough weight for cooler climates, it plays to both the refreshing and pleasantly boozy crowd. Compared to others in it’s class, it’s nicely balanced and has some notable pumpkin which is a change of pace for anything under 10%. This is an excellent gateway beer to the style. – Mike

Good Gourd Almighty – Cigar City Brewing


First of all, we’d sincerely like to grant you our thanks and wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving, and whatever holidays you might celebrate in the coming months. Rounding out our third year of reviews you’ve made us popular enough that we are buried in beers to cover, and since they’re becoming more and more scare on the shelves, we have opted to cover them in advance for next years season in hopes of bringing you more consistent coverage and getting you a lot more info early on as these brews start to hit the shelves.

Today’s entry is not particularly concerning in that regard as, if you don’t have it by now, you’re probably not going to get it until next year. But we did feel it’s coveted status would be a great entry for today, and we thank the almighty that we got our hands on a bottle. So gather round your friends and family, or maybe just a good meal and a good brew, and dig into one last seasonal review. From us to you, we give our thanks.


Name: Good Gourd Almighty

Place of Origin / Brewer: Tampa, Florida / Cigar City Brewing

Beer style / ABV%:  Imperial Pumpkin Ale / 8.5%

Specialty Prep / Individuality:

Almighty takes Cigar City’s ever popular Good Gourd (an imperial pumpkin ale that includes Ceylon cinnamon, Jamaican allspice, Zanzibar cloves, and nutmeg) and finishes it out for some time in rum barrels.



This is a special release barrel aged treatment beer, so the label is a bit derivative of it’s father brew, Good Gourd. It’s got some nice dark wood and autumn hues though, which certainly infer the bolder wood flavors I expect from this glass. – Mike

It’s not a far cry removed from the traditional Good Gourd packaging, but the “almighty’ stands out in a big way to help avoid confusion, settled against a backdrop of fall leaves, that even though CCB is in Tampa and probably never sees any ‘color’ still sets a festive mood. – Tim


Color: 7

The way this beer sits in the glass demands omniscience. Fully opaque burnt caramel has fringes of an amber glow, with slim to no head. It is awesome and unassuming. – Rick

Cloudy brownish orange, with a perfect circle of thin semi sticky lacing and little to no carbonation. It looks like there is almost a freeze frame of sediment floating in the glass. – Brittney

Aroma:  7.5

A heady nose with massive rum notes, the likes of which I haven’t seen since we cracked the Avery Rumpkin back in 2011. Oak and vanilla finish out the bouquet which displays no remaining signs of pumpkin or spice.  It smells intense and I’m not anticipating a little ‘shiver me timbers’ to go with my rum and pumpkin ale. – Tim

Sweet and creamy caramel notes mingle with some intense buttery fruit flavors. This is getting pretty complex already. It has a hot aroma that singes with rum at the nose, rounding out dry and oaken for the finish. – Rick

Mouth feel: 8

Slick and thick, medium bodied with just enough carbonation to keep you interested without an overwhelming presence of it. – Brittney

Some time in the barrel actual seems to have lightened up the body here, moving away from the syrupy origin of Good Gourd, and becoming much more smooth bodied with a light carbonation tingle. – Mike

Tasting notes: 8.5

Spiced Rum, treacle, dark fruits, and milk chocolate. This tastes a good bit like a Dale Degroff tropical pumpkin cocktail with a few extra dashes of Pimento Dram. It’s caramel coated pumpkin bread – beach side. – Mike

Welcome back pumpkin, what is lost on the nose is prevalent in the body, blending together with vanilla and cinnamon to deliver a drunken pumpkin pie extravaganza. With buttery crust notes and big malt flavors, the rum is held in check (but only barely) until the exhale permeates all my senses with full bodied flavor.  Pass the whip cream. – Tim

For as strong and intense as it smells it’s actually rather smooth in flavor.  You can tell that it’s got a Good Gourd foundation, but you can’t help but focus on the rum barrel aged accent and the alcohol. – Brittney

Based on the aroma alone I expected this to be super hot and over the top. It actually brings out complex flavors that really add to the experience going above and beyond the senses. It’s really accessible while boasting tons of flavor like banana, oak, cinnamon, rum, sugar, butter, all spice, and even bits of clove. – Rick

Finish: 8.5

The finish is all rum, but it is hardly abrasive. It reminds be heavily of Velvet Falernum. There is a lasting sweetness with a spicy nip, and a bite of citrus / lime. Definitely a Floridian pumpkin beer. A couple of these and I’ll be boarding ships. Forcibly. – Mike

The dry oak finish compliments the mouth feel so well, it removes any implication of being too hot due to a high alcohol content. There’s still a touch of heat on the back end and the rum is quite noticeable. – Rick

The pumpkin and spices in the base beer were already mixed really well, and the fact that they still stand out after the aging is impressive. I would add that the addition of oak and rum flavors accentuate the pumpkin profile and propel this beer into it’s final form. – Rick

The interplay of the spice / malt / pumpkin / wood / and rum here is powerfully complex and very enjoyable. You can spend long minutes over each sip musing on the different flavors that seem to pop out and retract into the recesses of this glass. The only thing that keeps me from declaring it truly divine is how very forward the rum qualities are at times. It’s not an unpleasant flavor, but as the drink goes on, I begin to lose a bit of the pumpkin as a result. – Mike

Quite balanced in this respect as the syrupy slickness and pumpkin tend to be sweet but the alcohol/barrel aged aspect brings the dry finish. – Brittney

Pronounced toffee like sweetness lend this ale a significant dessert aspect with only dry components coming on the close from the high ABV and the oak. – Tim

         Multiple Drinkability?  7.5

While I can appreciate treatments on beers and a bit of barrel aging, I probably wouldn’t drink much more than a glass of this. It’s got a very mellow sweetness that is well tempered by tannic acid qualities and the heat of the rum, but the intensity and alcohol makes it quite potent on the senses. – Brittney

It’s too heady and boozy to be sessionable. I’d rather drive up to some mountains, kick off my shoes and sip this sucker in a brandy snifter beside a roaring fire after a long day of snowboarding.  – Tim

Southampton Pumpkin Ale – Southampton Publick House

All Hallow’s Eve is approaching fast and we’re doing our damn-est to chug down some of the more sinister slanted ales as the date approaches. Stay tuned next week as we countdown. In the meantime it’s Friday, so we went the extra mile and reviewed a whole six pack of Southampton. ***Spoiler alert: Rick didn’t like it.***


Name:  Southampton Pumpkin Ale

Place of Origin / Brewer: New York, USA / Southampton Publick House

Beer style / ABV%:  Pumpkin Ale / 5.5%

Specialty Prep / Individuality:  Southampton is an Amber ale brewed with real pumpkin, spices, and vanilla extract.



Orange and Black, this is a very classic, colonial styled label, touting “Long Island’s Original Craft Brewery”.  This label is really so steeped in tradition that it almost seems shocking to see they have only been brewing since 1996.  In fact, I found the old world characteristics so compelling I wouldn’t have felt it surprising in the least had it read “since 1796” on the ale. – Tim

The orange-washed image of the Southampton Publick House stands strong on the label.  Looks like a pleasant place, I think I might like to visit there one day. – Brittney


Color:  6

This ale looks quite nice. Tons of motion, clear as crystal, and very rich dark amber tones. The head dissipates fairly quickly, but is constantly being refreshed by the activity of the ale. The color and clarity are the real highlights here though. – Mike

Strong bold amber coloring seems to be keeping with the norm in this style. The head appears frothy and highly agitated while leaving no lacing after vanishing. – Rick

Aroma:  7.5

Strong flavor on the aroma. There’s a good bit of pumpkin and vanilla that compliment each other very well. I feel like I’m in for a delicious treat. – Rick

Classic spicing is fully on show with vanilla sugar and a sharp pumpkin snap. It’s nicely multifaceted, if hardly subtle. – Mike

Mouth feel:  6

A model for a medium-bodied ale, this has a velvet thickness to it without leaning toward heavy.  The carbonation is a touch higher than I would like for a perfect mouth feel, but the beer is smooth and blossoming on the tongue. – Tim

Somewhat bland in this area; it’s super foamy and just a touch more dense than watery. I do get a malty smoothness that helps the drinkability, but this ale is light, too bubbly, and uninteresting. – Rick

Tasting notes:  6

Given the powerful aroma, this ale seems to be a good bit more reigned in than initially implied. We get a bubblegum fruity pumpkin with heaps of vanilla, on top of a dry and spicy amber ale that features quite a lot of caramel malt presence. – Mike

Very mild on the spice level, the pumpkin puree on the bouquet is also much more restrained here, allowing for nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice to present themselves.   However, even with the flavors peeking through the gourd, I find the ales nose to have been far more promising than the actual, physical body itself. I would have liked to seen a more malty ale than what Southampton is selling. – Tim

The taste arrives a little subdued after the intensity of the aroma but doesn’t completely let you down.  There is a nice mellow undertone of vanilla throughout with smatterings of that real pumpkin flavor, cinnamon and nutmeg. – Brittney

This ale virtually forgoes any traditional spicing and rests the flavor on the shoulders of the vanilla extract and pumpkin, which are also pretty weak. I’m sure there’s a hint of cinnamon in there, but the dry bitter finish masks all of the subtleties of the spicing. – Rick

Finish:  5

I think I can still feel the sensation from the carbonation in my mouth long after it’s gone. The finish leaves behind mostly nutmeg and vanilla with a bit of bitterness. – Brittney

Tart and spicy, I get a pretty powerful punch of clove and drying nutmeg, but not so much that it lingers unpleasantly long, rather queuing to a tight finish with crusty bread notes. – Mike

This ale is a little more schizophrenic than I’d like to see.  The aroma is spot on for pumpkin with subtle spices, but the body holds more spice than gourd.  If the finish could have balanced everything out this would have scored a little higher, but overall it’s a noble effort. – Tim

The aroma brings more to the table than the taste does so unfortunately it gets a little lost among the spice. – Brittney

A bit dry with mulled cider tartness beginning to dominate by half glass. – Mike

Usually I like a drier beer, but this one has me wanting more sweetness out of it. It doesn’t help that the finish is on the sour side for our pumpkins. – Rick

It might seem like I’ve been overly critical of this ale for its somewhat disjointed overall vibe, but the truth is, this is a very approachable fall brew and you could do a lot worse than taking home a sixer and settling down to some turkey and stuffing.  It’s a decent beer and I wouldn’t pass up another bottle. – Tim

Punk’n Harvest Pumpkin Ale – Uinta Brewing Co.

Having already reviewed it’s big brother, we’re delving into Uinta’s more everyday, devil may care offering. Let’s cue the Pogues, dial into Matthew Lilliard circa 1998, and see how it stacks up.


Name:  Punk’n Harvest Pumpkin Ale

Place of Origin / Brewer: Utah, USA / Uinta Brewing Co.

Beer style / ABV%:  Pumpkin Ale / 4.00%

Specialty Prep / Individuality:  Malt and hops accented with organic roasted pumpkin and organic spices of the season including cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, and a  subtle hint of vanilla and honey. Try it with roasted turkey, squash or pumpkin ravioli, peach cobbler, or pumpkin cheesecake. It’s also brewed on the same renewable power system as Uinta’s other beers, as we touched on in our review of their Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin Ale.



I love this label. It’s simple and clean and lovely. It’s got an iconic pumpkin that’s already popped it’s top and ready for carving, a compass embossed into the bottle itself, and a well thought out font selection for the description on the side. – Brittney

I love the craft nature of this label, with the graphic intense artwork I’m reminded of letterpress printing styles from the early 20th century.  I also like the “Earth, Wind and Beer” motto which–other than bringing to mind disco–denotes a very artisian zen vibe and highlights the alternative power sources used to produce the ale.  I am, however, at least somewhat confused by the “3% Organic Ingredients” proclamation.  I’m not sure that conveys a ‘homemade’ vibe they must be going for.  Mostly it makes me wonder where the other 97% came from. – Tim


Color:  7

A fizzy amber ale with nice hay yellow highlights, great clarity, and solid staying power on the fluffy head. – Mike

Wonderful pumpkin-orange copper coloration makes for a very appetizing brew. The thick cream colored head lasts for a bit and leaves nice amounts of lacing behind. – Rick

Aroma:  6.5

I’m immediately struck by the bready notes and fresh vegetal pumpkin on the bouquet. Curiously the aroma on this beer is very understated–which for a pumpkin ale (that generally assaults your senses) is both a welcome change and a puzzling curiosity. – Tim

Funky vegetal greenery and grains with extreme amounts of squashy pumpkin. Some Oat and caramel notes underlay, with dry nutmeg, and ten tons of pumpkin puree. – Mike

Mouth feel:  6

Smooth velvet washes over the tongue making it easy to drink. Each sip starts with a bold splash, but quickly falls flat over the tongue. – Rick

After a slight fight through the remaining head, this one is light bodied and very active. The carbonation masks most anything else you could find in this as far as mouth feel goes. – Brittney

Tasting notes:  6

If individuality is a virtue, this sucker has it. The gourd presence from the nose stays firmly dominant, and yields both rye and heavy barley with under played nutmeg that tastes as though it’s been freshly ground. – Mike

Earthy like fresh pumpkin guts, sweet breadiness from the malts but light on the spicing with only a touch of cinnamon sneaking in.  The light aroma should have been a tell-tale sign, but I find this ale to be somewhat weak and far too mellow to really stand out. – Tim

Slightly disappointed that the flavor sort of fades away on this one.  The aroma really had me excited for something great but all of the sweet pumpkin you could smell up front gets lost becoming just a slight vegetal taste with a tiny bit of spice.  If you are looking for a less sweet option for an introduction pumpkin beer this is the way to go. – Brittney

Not too much happening with the sweet pumpkin aspect unfortunately. What was captured in the aroma is lost here in the flavor. The gourdy profile turns out to be bitter and a tad souring leaving some sweet spices to be desired. – Rick

Finish:  6

Peppery and bitter, the finish was unexpected. I have a feeling that this brew might be indicative of a more traditional or authentic pumpkin ale than what we are used to today, with less spicing and relying on the vegetal quality of the gourd to round out the flavor. – Rick

Short-mid-range finish with a touch of hoppy bitterness and tang, coupled with more bready malts and a hit of caramel-esque sweetness.  I’m actually more of a fan of the finish of this beer than I am of the bouquet and the body.  I guess it’s beneficial to make your last impression a good one. – Tim

As understated as this beer is, it almost feels unfair to nitpick the harmony on display here.  I think it needs to get amped way up in both departments–but, as it stands, it’s unquestionably more pumpkin than pie.  And that’d be fine, but it’s not balanced if you’re aiming the entire beer below median level.  – Tim

I’m starting to appreciate this ale more as the glass nears empty. The pumpkin dominant profile is subtly accented by a light addition of spices, which seems to go against the grain of other pumpkin ales. – Rick

It tips ever so slightly dry, with grain and spice complimenting a very clean and easy drinking vegetal pumpkin. – Mike

A little on the bitter dry side of the spectrum, but decently well rounded. Worth noting here is a slight sourness of a vegetal quality which knocks back any sweetness as well as helping dry it out. – Rick

If you could judge a beer by it’s bottle I would drink this one all night long.  It’s subtlety in flavor makes it a simple one to return to for more than one bottle. – Brittney

While there is a relative lack of complexity to this ale, I think it hollow’s out a comfortable and approachable niche, particularly appealing to the drinker that is turned off by sucrose laden pints, and not yet ready for sour funk or a spice beat down. It’s a simple session, but sometimes that’s what the doctor ordered. – Mike

Bluepoint Pumpkin Ale – Bluepoint Brewing Company

As much as we’d like to give every craft brewer a pat on the back, the bottom line is, just because it’s independent, doesn’t mean it’s great. Sometimes things just need a little work, sometimes they need a lot, but we try to keep it critical and straight up, and hopefully, that feedback is appreciated.


Name:  Bluepoint Pumpkin Ale

Place of Origin / Brewer:  New York, USA / Blue Point Brewing Company

Beer style / ABV%:  Pumpkin Ale / 6.0%

Specialty Prep / Individuality:  Brewed with pumpkins “from only the most sincere patches”, this seasonal brew is golden orange,  with a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg.



I really like the country  store nature of this burlap label.  It’s got a real folksy craft vibe that gives me small town Americana vibes– like sitting on a porch after a long day, eyes gazed across the golden waves of wheat quivering a the field while John Mellencamp’s Scarecrow album plays. – Tim

Yeah, there’s a pumpkin on it, but it’s not jumping off the shelf to me.  The colors are subdued and the overall labeling seems like another Photoshop blunder.  I’m not sure why the “burlap sack” texture has to dominate the entire label, including the logo and ale’s name. – Rick

Cider clear with a brown sugar tint and just the slightest hint of orange  to remind us that this is in fact a pumpkin beer. – Mike

Crystal clear, golden brown and very active, it looks like a cold glass of cream soda.  It has a solid head and heavy lacing.  – Brittney

This ale has a great sweet aroma, mostly fulfilled by the nutmeg and cinnamon spices.  There also seems to be a pumpkin based scent as well. – Rick

There is a really earthy spice to it.  Usually, it’s the pumpkin that I describe as earthy but the nutmeg and cinnamon are coming through as really raw with a creamy caramel. – Brittney

Warm and spicy, with a touch of smoky baked pumpkin and a good bit of cinnamon. The nutmeg seems to take on subdued sense, but is certainly prevalent as well. Most notably though, is the fair amount of hop dried texture that makes this ale variable from the rest, particularly given the quite light body. – Mike

Ever have a beer that just sort of tastes like ‘beer’?  That’s Blue Point for me.  Some minor sweetness from the malt, notes of Carmel, some sour vegetal pumpkin flavors pop up here and there. A little more honey on the back-end–but it was better in the bouquet.  Overall it’s a bit watery and far to innocuous and one-dimensional to regard with much rapture. – Tim

Frankly, I’m pretty bored with the taste of this beer.  It’s heavy on spice and dry.  The pumpkin is really hard to place and every other supporting ingredient is lacking character.  – Brittney

This malt beverage is very drinker friendly.  There’s a slight bit of sweet spice to it, but the carbonation really dilutes any flavors from flourishing.  There is however a nice hop finish that’s not too bitter or overwhelming. – Rick

Actually the brew has a nice crisp finish revealing some dryer characteristics that weren’t prevalent in the body, touches of pumpkin on the close and that’s about it–clearing the palate pretty swiftly. – Tim

The caramel malts and the honey notes add a nice bit of sweetness in the glass, and the crisp finish reveal a pretty solid cohesion in the product, it just serves a master that’s not up to the task on the other fronts. – Tim

–         Multiple Drinkability?

This is easy as heck to drink, but sadly that seems to be more because the texture more closely resembles the near teetotaling American mass produced beers, than something that you’d want to return to for it’s own merit. – Mike

I’d personally pass on another round, but since this sorta falls under what I would consider a ‘light pumpkin beer’ you could probably knock back a sixer of this and not feel any pain or regret.  So take that as you want in terms of a recommendation. – Tim
